An Amazing Exfoliating Clay Scrub For Face And Body

Exfoliation is a very important part of any skin care routine for beautiful glowing skin.  Not only does it help to clean and renew skin by sloughing away dead skin cells, but it also unclogs the make up, oil and dirt in your pores which can cause blackheads and breakouts. If you have dry skin, it helps to exfoliate dead skin cells and make your skin much softer and smoother.

Knowing that it is important to exfoliate regularly, I have tried many face scrubs, including many store bought products, over the years. Some of them worked great but I could tell that they were hard on the skin so I only used once in a while.  Many of the store bought products can be very expensive and contain so questionable chemicals and ingredients I like to avoid.

I had been on a search for a natural but effective scrub for a while and then my good friend Andrea gave me a great Christmas gift last year – a home made exfoliating clay scrub ! The first time I tried it I fell madly in love with it! It was so easy to use, smelled great, felt great and my skin instantly felt smooth and clean.

The ingredients are simple, natural and safe (which I like a lot): baking soda, green clay, vegetable glycerin, and essential oils.  That’s it.

How The Home Made Clay Scrub Works

Baking soda works magic in any household. It is safe, natural and pure and very economical. Not only can we use it for baking but it can remove stains, freshen the air, clean bathrooms, kitchens and so much more.  It also works great as a face scrub. The grains in baking soda are just the right size to act as a gentle exfoliant. Baking soda alone works great as a facial scrub but by adding other ingredients, you can make an amazing scrub.

Clays have been used for centuries in many cultures as a facial mask. It has been said that Cleopatra used clay from the Nile river and the Romans used clay in the spas built almost 4000 years ago. Clays clear the pores by lifting out the pimples and blackheads and nourish the skin with rich minerals.

Glycerin helps maintain the skin’s water balance by preventing and combating dry skin. The effects of essential aroma oil(s) cannot be ignored!  Like clay, essential oils have been used for thousands of years. They improve and support overall mental/physical health.  They promote relaxation and reduce stress, enhance moods, boost the immune/circulation systems and so much more!

How To Make The Home Made Exfoliating Clay Scrub

It is so easy to make it and can save a lot of money.

You need:

1 cup of baking soda
1/8 cup of green clay
1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin
Total of 10- 14 drops of essential oil(s) of your choice.

(I used Ylag Ylang and Lavender oil this time. They are great as a pair and work great for mature, aging skin. They also lift up your mood and work as an antidepressant.)

Using a whisk, mix all the ingredients together. You may need to use your dry fingers to break up some possible clumps from the moisture of the glycerin and essential oils. Whisk again. Leave the container in your shower and apply on face, neck, back, hands, etc.

How To Use The Home Made Clay Scrub

Gently rub onto your clean, wet skin and leave it on for 5 minutes and then rinse off. This scrub is gentle enough to use daily but if you have sensitive skin, try it 2 – 3 times a week. For maximum results, try this clay scrub combined with other facial treatments.

P.S. If you want to try the gray clay I use (and I highly recommend this one!), you can get it right here.

    1. Hi Ambreen, we’re so happy to know, take a look at the products on our store and if you have any questions or need a recommendation send us a message 🙂

  1. Can i ask what the consistency should be like? Is it still powdery? How is it applied? With wet hands on wet face? I only used creamy ones before, which could be applied as a mask.
