Can Eye Exercises Improve Your Vision?

Last October I turned 47 years so I am not exactly a spring chicken by society’s standards but I still feel like one. Some great habits including healthy foods, meditation, practicing yoga and Facial Yoga help to keep me young but nobody can avoid aging 100%.

After my 47th birthday, I went to see my eye doctor for my annual check up. I was getting mentally ready to be told by him that I would need reading glasses even though I wasn’t experiencing “blurred” vision problems associated with aging. He ran all the tests including visual acuity, eye refraction, eye health, eye focus and eye movements. To my great surprise, he said my eyes are still amazingly perfect. I am near sighted and I wear glasses and contact lenses. But my eye movements and eye focus was 100% accurate when he used the machine to check them.

I was so happy. My eye doctor said that I was lucky that I didn’t need reading glasses yet. Out of curiosity, I asked him if it is possible to delay the aging eye related problem of presbyopia (farsightedness caused by loss of elasticity of the lens of the eye typically occurring in middle and old age.) by exercising the eye muscles.

He said he didn’t think you could improve the eye lense elasticity at the age of 47.

Then he added, it could work if I were 20 years old. And then he told me that he just tested one of his patients who is in her twenties and she has seen some positive results. I asked him to show me the exercise he gave to his young patient. Rather reluctantly, he showed me the exercise, called “pencil push ups”.

It is a simple eye movement exercise using a pencil moving back and forth in front of your face. Sometimes in the afternoon, I have blurred vision, especially when I am tired but if I do the pencil push ups, I see things more clearly.

So, if you were wondering whether eye exercises can improve your vision, give this a try and see what happens. It won’t harm you and it will make your eyes feel great!

  1. Hi Fumiko,

Thank you for all your help and enthusiasm. You are right about the eyes, and that simple exercise is a good one, among many others. However, if the shape of the cranium changes over time, due to injury (head blows), or internal stress, or structural misalignment (all very important), the ability of the small eye muscles to adapt to those changes is minimized. I used NCR (Neuro-Cranial Restructuring) to achieve deep changes in the alignment of the cranial bones, and after 12 year (12 series of NCR), and other body work, my eyes are nearly restored to 20-20, after 25 years if needing glasses. I am 71 years young, and getting better. Your Face Yoga Method is one of several approaches that will help your vision, and facial tone.
