Our minds are wired to cling to certainty. But what happens when things shift radically, or are suddenly different?
Right now we are all facing unfamiliar territory and it can be hard to know what to do and how to keep anxiety, boredom, and fear out of our thoughts. It’s even harder when you’re isolated at home and cannot connect with your community, co-workers, family or friends for support and distraction.
My biggest piece of advice for this time, is to practice self-care and create your own self-care routine.
As we all strive to find our “new normal” it’s important for us to create a new routine that involves self-care, or better said – taking care of yourself. By building such a routine, we are giving ourselves an anchor while everything else feels untethered. And we can find space and time to feel centered while everything else feels so uncertain.
“I intend to fully make use of this quarantine period to indulge in self care! “ ~ Aparna R.
If you haven’t set aside time for yourself in your daily routine, now’s the perfect time!
Here are my top 3 tips for creating a new self-care routine that centers around your wellbeing, health, and happiness.
Tip #1: Take Action
Let’s get the challenging step out of the way: Action!
Every successful routine starts with a plan. So first, reflect on what self-care means to you.
Maybe it’s waking up a little early to start your day off a little quieter and slower, or maybe it’s giving yourself a foot massage before bed.
Whatever self-care means to you, it has to be 100% genuinely something you love and will benefit from.
Face Yoga has countless benefits like reducing wrinkles, creating symmetry, improving your smile, and brightening your eyes. But the best part is, all of these physical results are encouraging mental improvements too!
Here’s a quick and calming Face Yoga exercise to try right now:
- Reduce stress
- Increase immunity
- Boost oxygenation of the blood
- Improves sleep and boosts energy
“I have put into action a few face yoga methods in my skin care regime with a lot of discipline. I am amazed with the result 🙏 Thank you Fumiko” ~ Sushma T.
But, success from Face Yoga isn’t only from action. My Method includes the 3 holistic aspects of The Face Yoga Method: Mind, Body, Face.
Tip #2: Raise Your Awareness
Now that you have a plan in place, start raising your awareness around your energy sources throughout the day.
What do you ingest first thing in the morning?
How much time are you spending watching media or online?
Who are you listening to in your downtime?
These are all very important questions that make a huge impact on your mental (and therefore physical) wellbeing.
If you’re using a smartphone, computer or any digital device, I want you to try the “digital detox” everyday, especially if you’re always busy and feeling like you don’t have enough time.
Just doing this simple smartphone detox can improve not only your productivity and the quality of your sleep but your overall mental health.
Life is passing by while we’re busy checking our social media accounts and online that we don’t realize how much we’re missing out in life; the smell of flowers, the smell of the food we’re eating, the smile of your child, the birds singing beautifully outside and so much more.
Start with 15 minutes, and work your way up!
“With our perception of the facial musculature and our inner smile, we give ourselves and the world more wellbeing, joy and love! I kept my inner clarity, did the chest opening exercise, took a deep breath in and out AND my smile came back 😀” ~ Heide M.
Tip #3: Hold Yourself Accountable
I’ve saved the best for last! The aspects that will keep you in momentum, is community accountability. I know that even the best plan and awareness is a much harder journey to complete without like-minded people supporting you. So, I’ve built it in!
Every year we set resolutions, and over 80% of the time, they fall short within a month. Why?
Because we need accountability!
I’ve spent the last two years inviting and hand-picking a very special group of people from around the world to come together in a safe, online space. The Face Yogi Community.
Every Face Yogi is welcome to join this one of a kind support group and join myself and my team in a virtual sanctuary for your practice.
“Thank you, dear Yogis, for your support and comments which helped me on my way. Thank you, Fumiko, for showing me new directions:-)” ~ Svetlana N.

A few months ago I mandated “Wellness Days” for everyone on my team. The only requirement is that they use this emoji 💆♀️ and post a photo on our team channel of a highlight of their day (a little FOMO never hurt anyone). Other than that, they have to stay away from work.
And you know what happened? Everyone’s work ethic improved. Because now, they have the time to step away, recharge, and focus on what’s most important to them.
Self-care looks different for every person. Here’s how my team spends their Wellness Days:
