Smokers Lines: How to Get Rid of This Specific Lip Wrinkle Type

The lines between the nose and upper lip are called “smokers lines” and you can get them as you age even if you are not a smoker.  In this blog, I will show you an exercise that helps reduce and even prevent the appearance of lip wrinkles.

You Can Get Smokers Lines Not Only From Smoking

I love painting and drawing. That used to be my hobby when I was a college student in Japan. At night, I spent hours when everybody in my family went to bed and I would work on my art projects. It was so therapeutic. The next day, I always showed my finished project to my grandmother who was living with us. She was the best art critic for my projects.

She always found the best in all of my projects and praised them no matter what. Everybody needs praise once in a while, right?  I remember one day when I was drawing the face of my grandmother I felt there was something missing in the drawing.  I added a couple of lines in the area between the nose and upper lip and instantly, the face in the drawing aged dramatically.  I was so shocked to see how much those simple lines could affect the way drawing looked.  The wrinkles around lips can be very aging. The next day, I did not show the drawing to my grandmother. I just did not want to make her feel sad and I did not want to draw attention to her age. She was a very beauty-conscious person and I somehow knew that she would not appreciate the drawing.

My grandma never smoked, but she got these lines mostly due to the aging process. I wish I knew more about Face Yoga back then, my grandma would love practicing with me!

Exercise To Get Rid Of Lip Wrinkles

Here is one pose you can try if you are concerned with and want to get rid of “smokers lines”. By adding a body movement, you should feel more contraction in the area between the nose and upper lip. Even if you do not see the lines yet, try this pose to prevent “smokers lines” in the future.

  1. Given the positive responses from readers regarding the exercises for smokers lines, could you share additional face yoga exercises or tips targeted at addressing different types of facial wrinkles, such as those around the eyes or forehead?

Hi Puja! Thanks for reaching out. You can find these exercises in the Mouth and Cheek area of the book or in the Mouth and Cheek 28 day Jumpstart 🙂

  3. Won’t this exercise stretch the skin around your lips and make the lines worse!? If not, why not? Why does it work?

    1. Hi Helen,

In general, the skin cannot be overstretched because it’s directly attached to the muscle. 🙂 When it comes to mouth, the skin and the muscles around them are very stretchable (think of when we are yawning) and with this exercise the muscles will be stretched in a functional and effective way! Just as a little preparation before doing the exercise, you can put on a moisturizer or a face oil and massage the lips and mouth area for a couple of moments. Finally, if you are afraid of over stretching, don’t do the exercise too hard, since sometimes less is more! 🙂

      Hope this helps!

      Best,
      Fumiko

I need to diminish smoker lines on the bottom lip. When I do the exercise for the smoker lines on upper lip, I really don’t feel anything when I turn my head towards the shoulder. Any suggestions?
