How Quarantine Derailed My Life (and the secret to getting it back)

Routine is crucial to holistic wellness, and nothing made this more abundantly clear than the global COVID-19 pandemic. 

Our lives took a 180-degree turn overnight. 

My daughter was home with us from school, and like most mothers, I was thrust into the role of parent, nurse, teacher, caregiver, wife, friend, CEO, cook, and housekeeper –  in an instant. And while I love doing all of these things, doing it in “COVID state” was draining my mental health.  

It was as if someone had pressed the pause button on life.

Like most, I felt as if someone had pressed the pause button on my life, and they were holding on to the remote control. 

Typical to my personality, at first I took to this challenge like an olympian… 

I set a plan with my husband, we shared it with our daughter. 
I got into the habit of ordering groceries online and planning our meals weeks in advance. 
I learned what my daughter needed from us to learn and grow scholastically from home. 
I became incredibly good at washing masks nightly and disinfecting my home routinely. 

But no matter how hard I tried, things just could never be the same as they were before this virus.

I couldn’t see my family outside of my home, I was on-edge shopping for groceries in the markets, I craved hugs and physical connection, and I missed my overseas family increasingly each day and wondered when I would even be able to travel to Japan again to see them.  

And then – Loss. 

Losing a dear friend early on shifted my “coping mechanisms” into overdrive and I entered into a fear-based state.

I didn’t sleep well. 
My anxiety came in ebbs. 
Somedays I felt in control, some days I felt overwhelmed with fear. 
I had this underlying unconscious energy being spent on the “what if” scenarios that were depleting my mental capacity and physical energy big time. 

I wasn’t taking the time to care for myself the way I should be. 
I wasn’t eating the same or exercising as I used to. 
I was plagued by the sadness and stress in the world, and I manifested it within myself. 

All of this had drained me to a point where I was laying in unable to do anything but cry and mourn. 

I got up to splash my face after this cathartic release, looked in the mirror and my solution was so obvious it literally looked me in the face…

Routine was my salvation.

I saw how stress had created a saddened forehead and how sorrow had swollen my under-eye bags. I looked as if I had aged 10 years. 

After weeks living in this quarantine, and all of the mental exhaustion and physical fatigue, I found liberation in the form of creating my “new normal”.

Looking at myself in the mirror that night, I knew it was time to refocus some energy on my self-care and that I had to find a way to do this in a community-like setting. 

I began my journey of this “new normal” and this new me by rekindling relationships I had let fall to the wayside, and the first one I started with-  was my relationship with myself

It’s time to define your “new normal”…. 

I know it’s been an incredibly hard start to the new year, but as crazy as it might sound – I’m grateful for this experience because of all of the good that it can (and will) bring. 

There’s never been a better time to recreate yourself and your routine! 

The simplest way to get yourself back on track and get your life together is to establish a routine, something you can stick to, that doesn’t take too much time from your day, and most importantly – helps you feel amazing.
