Reverse Aging By Breaking These 5 Everyday Habits

Oftentimes when we think about reversing aging, we jump to conclusions that special creams and serums are the solution. And while, yes, high quality skin care is essential, our daily habits are actually what contributes to much of our premature aging and unhealthy skin conditions.

While that may sound daunting, there’s really good news:

By solely bringing awareness to your daily habits, you can prevent unnecessary fine lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place.

Yes, it can be that simple!

Understanding the Power of Our Daily Habits

Our day to day actions, no matter how small, have long term effects on both our body and mind. This is why bringing awareness and transforming habits into conscious decisions are the essential steps to reverse the aging process.

Repeated subconscious actions create patterns, and just as in life, these repeated actions also affect the appearance of our skin and face.

Here Are the Top 5 Habits Taking a Toll on Your Skin:

Habit #1: Sleeping Posture

Yes, you read that right, our sleeping posture shows up on our face.

You might have noticed that lines, wrinkles, or nasolabial folds are deeper on one side of your face, over the other, and in the morning your face may be puffy. This is especially true if you are a side or stomach sleeper, because your face remains compressed on one side for the majority of the night. Over time, this compression causes the skin to form lines and deep creases like crows feet and nasolabial folds.

Even if you are a back sleeper, your pillow could be a big problem and be causing a double-chin and turkey neck.

To help you prevent more damage and wrinkles on the sides of your face and neck, we recommend investing in the right pillow to help you form a NEW Habit of sleeping on your back, or eliminate face compression if you remain a side or stomach sleeper.

After years of personal-studies and research, these are our top picks:

1) Le Grand Save My Face Pillow
2) La Petite Save My Face Pillow
3) Sleep and Glow Pillow

 Habit #2: Bad Posture

You know the saying “if your body could talk”? Well at Face Yoga Method, we believe it does

In our Programs, we teach something called “The Activated Face”. This centralizes around our ideology that there is a certain way we can carry ourselves that portrays confidence, determination and gives off positive energy, all while correcting facial expressions that cause aging, both small and large.

The Activated Face brings into awareness subconscious squinting, frowning, or any other facial expression that is contributing to premature aging by inviting you to relax and reset your facial expression.

This, of course, requires full awareness of our muscles and how we carry ourselves, so that we can correct the habits that aren’t serving us.

Now, think about the simplest habits you have:

Do you always cross your legs the same way?
Do you always carry your bag on the sale shoulder?
Do you shrug your shoulders and curve your back?
How is your posture while you are on your phone?
Are you aware of your neck and head position as you work or watch TV?

Body posture is so important because any of these small daily habits can all cause asymmetry on our face, along with dark circles, a puffy face, turkey neck and double chin.

By bringing attention to our full body posture, we automatically reset our body, face and mind.

For example, try taking a deep breath in and out as you roll your shoulders back and move your chin up. It is likely that when you carry yourself in this way, you also reset your face to reflect a more relaxed and confident you.

We don’t often frown or squint when our body posture is proper. By simply correcting these actions throughout the day, you can embrace aging in a more confident and empowered way!

Habit #3: The Sun Protection Myth

Collectively we agree that Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for bone and immune health, and while we encourage everyone to get their healthy daily dose of Vitamin D, sun protection is imperative for healthy skin.

So, how can you combine Vitamin D with sun protection?

You can get Vitamin D from food and supplements, but our body naturally produces Vitamin D with the help of sunlight and more specifically UVB rays! UVB rays are also the ones that cause sunburn, which is our body’s way of warning us that we have had too much sun exposure.

UVB rays contribute to skin’s cell damage but it is the UVA rays that cause much deeper penetration into the skin, and result in more harmful and permanent damage. These damages can cause cancer and a process called photo-aging.

This is why sun protection is an essential habit to get into to keep your skin healthy!

Solution

As always, we recommend finding a solution that works for you, but we encourage a healthy relationship with the sun including getting a dose of Vitamin D. The best practice we recommend is to get your sun in the early morning hours (usually before 10am), when the UVA rays are not so harmful, and in the evening hours (after 5pm).

All of the other times, especially when you are directly exposed to the sun, we recommend proper sun protection.

Habit #4: Stress / Lack of Self-Care

Scientists have named stress as the modern day leading cause of disease.

Stress is a chain reaction, or a response. And while this is a natural defense mechanism in all species, today, humans are in this state for greater amounts of time. When we experience chronic levels of stress, high amounts of cortisol build up in our brain, which leads to disease, and can affect the brain’s ability to function. Stress also impacts our cognitive function.

Skin is the largest organ on our body, and just like stress can impact our other bodily functions, it can also age our skin.

But, the good news is, we can recover and reduce stress with Face Yoga! 🙂

At the Face Yoga Method we spread the mission that SELF-CARE is the least selfish thing you can do!

By allowing time for self care, you empower yourself to take control. You give yourself permission to show up fully for yourself first, so that you can show up for others!

Habit #5: Poor Diet

You knew this was coming!

Our skin is just a representation of what is happening on the inside.

What we eat reflects not only on our health, but it shows on our skin, too. Our skin is just a representation of what is happening on the inside.

For example, dehydration. When we are dehydrated, our internal organs cannot function in their optimal state, and this shows up in dark circles, eye bags, saggy looking skin, as well as vertical lines on our lips. All of these things are examples of our body communicating to us that it needs something.

Likewise, a high dose of sugar and processed foods will cause breakouts and dim the natural glow of your skin. Just as when we lack nutrients, such as necessary vitamins and minerals.

This is why proper nutrition will not only reverse, but will help you embrace the aging process.
