How To Fix Asymmetrical Face With Face Yoga

Improved facial symmetry is one of the most commonly sought-after benefits of our clients. Whether you’re looking to even out the size of your eyes, adjust the shape of your nose, or correct a lopsided smile, Face Yoga is a wonderful way to fix an asymmetrical face and create a more symmetrical look 100% naturally.

WHY SYMMETRICAL FACES ARE MORE ATTRACTIVE

There’s a lot of psychology behind what we find attractive. But regardless of culture, nationality, age, or gender, facial symmetry is universally associated with attractiveness in both sexual and non-sexual contexts.

Psychological studies conclude that the most well-supported theory for this fact is that humans have evolved to recognize symmetry as representative of good genes and physical health.

FACE SYMMETRY TEST

While a little bit of asymmetry is completely normal, you might be wondering if your face is symmetrical. While some of you might be pretty sure that they have an asymmetrical face (especially when it’s obvious), for those who are unsure here’s a great exercise to determine where you have symmetry in your face.

Start by looking into a mirror or taking a photo (one smiling and one with a relaxed face) and check for the following:

  • Are your  brows the same height?
  • Are both eyes the same size?
  • Is one eyelid more droopy?
  • Are the corners of the mouth the same height?
  • Are both sides of the lips the same size?
  • Is the tip of your nose tilted, or nostrils the same width?
  • Do your cheeks have the same volume?
  • Are your dimples or pouches on the sides of your mouth the same size?
  • Do you have deeper wrinkles on one side of your face or the other?

If you’re looking to correct asymmetrical face or improve your overall facial asymmetry, our Face Toning Bootcamp is the fastest way to achieve all-over symmetry and facial toning.

When practicing Face Yoga for symmetry (or for any reason) it’s important to practice poses equally on both sides of your face. Even if one side of your face is more dominant and stronger than the other, keep practicing and helping your weaker side get stronger!

POSTURE – AN IMPORTANT FACTOR CAUSING FACIAL ASYMMETRY

Every imbalance in the body can cause facial asymmetries. If you’re seeing wrinkles on one side of your face or neck more than the other, check your posture to be sure you are sitting and standing with an erect and relaxed spine, shoulders are even, and breathing is steady.

Since our body and face are connected, what the body does shows on the face. Don’t forget to strengthen your core and improve flexibility with body exercise too!

3 TIPS FOR FIXING AN ASYMMETRICAL EYE AREA

  1. AWARENESS AND FACIAL EXERCISES: If you look closely at your face in the mirror, you can usually see that one eye is slightly (or significantly) larger than the other and the larger eye is also usually higher than the smaller. While it’s important not to fixate on the symmetry of our face, the good news is that using awareness and facial exercises we can create a more symmetrical face!
  2. CORRECTING YOUR DAILY HABITS: Often we get asymmetrical eyes of the actions we take in our day. For example, if you talk on your phone on one side of your face, you probably have a lift in the corner of that eye and more crow’s feet and wrinkles.
  3. CHANGING YOUR SLEEP POSITION: Sleep position is one of the leading causes of asymmetry in our faces. Sleeping on your back is the best position to help prevent wrinkles and asymmetry, but most people find sleeping on their back uncomfortably. Instead, you can try this pillow which has been specially created to reduce pressure and friction on your face when sleeping on your side.

FACE YOGA FOR THE ASYMMETRICAL (CROOKED) NOSE

While the eyes play a very important role in our communication with others, the nose is the focal point of our face. Often, people are unhappy with their nose and want it to be thinner, shallower, and for their nostrils to be more equal.

The nose is primarily made up of firm cartilage, BUT there are muscles on your nose and surrounding areas that allow face yoga to work on the nose area too!

Since this area is mostly cartilage, the secret to reshaping your nose is consistency and attention to your daily habits. The changes on the nose area are not as dramatic or obvious as on the body or other parts of your face, so you cannot expect overnight changes by doing the exercise once a week.

Here is my top Face Yoga pose to try for reshaping the muscles around the nose:

For best results, do three to five repetitions of this pose. Remember, you while it is important to focus on your nose, do not wrinkle your forehead.

GETTING RID OF A LOPSDIED SMILE

A smile is our invitation, introduction, and blueprint for everyone we see.

After the car accident, I was in my thirties, my smile was lopsided, my neck, back, and shoulders slanted, and this new reality made me so aware of what muscles I use to move my face and body.

Fumiko Takatsu's after accident face compared to perfect symmetry lines.

I started to realize how simple, tiny adjustments could change the way I presented myself to the world.

If I could lift my cheek just slightly here, and relax my chin there, I could present a smile I felt beautiful and confident with. Here’s a pose I always do before I hit the door to give me the best symmetrical smile:

It’s small things like this and the little habits we do each day that create our “look”.

The first step is awareness and once you have that, you’re on your way to feeling and looking your best! If you’re ready to try Face Yoga and want to start creating a more symmetrical smile naturally, download the FREEBIE TUTORIAL below!

WHAT FACIAL ASYMMETRY SAYS ABOUT OUR ENERGY

The lines and wrinkles on our face tell a story and since our face is our first impression, it’s important to try to do our best to look happy, bright, and open. In addition to wrinkles being a result of our habits, all of our emotions are stored on our face.

Facial reflexology relates the different sides of the face to either masculine or feminine energy.

The left side of your face is the more feminine side and relates to who you are and your personal life.

Strong feminine energy traits include:

  • Vulnerability
  • Honesty
  • Transparency
  • Authenticity

To balance your dominant feminine energy try:

  • Meditation
  • Journalling
  • Alone time

The right side is the more masculine side and relates to your work.

Strong masculine energy traits include:

  • Curiosity
  • Creativity
  • Easy going
  • Self-awareness

To balance your dominant masculine energy try:

  • Creative projects
  • Self-care
  • Setting clear boundaries

We recommend our Mouth & Cheek Jumpstart that can help you focus on that area and using your fingers you can help the weaker side achieve the same level 🙂

  1. The paragraph written under the picture of you sleeping on your stomach mentions a pillow to “reduce pressure and friction on your face when sleeping on your side”, but there’s no link listed if the pillow. What is it called and where can it be found?

  2. Hi I remember browsing your website a year or two ago and spotted a program I absolutely would have loved to purchase. It focused on overall facial asymmetry but now I can’t find it. Do you still offer it and if not, I’m hoping the same exercises offered in that program can be found in another program. Thanks!

    1. Hi Mena! The Bootcamp is our most comprehensive Program that focuses on the entire face with daily guided videos to every area of the face. 🙂

  3. Hello Fumiko,
the right side of my face has more wrikles than the left one (on the forehead, below my eye, and also a long vertical wrinkle next to my mouth towards the chin, a bit strange one). Would you happen to know why is this? Does it have anything to do with the internal organs perhaps? (I’m pretty healthy, not taking any medcs..) THank you!

    1. Hi Michaela! Asymmetry is very common. Many things can cause asymmetry and more often then not it is due to subconscious aging habits. For example, sleeping position, posture, squinting, always doing something on the same side, etc. Hope that helps bring some awareness to your habits! 🙂

  4. So many people follow you..you are inspiring our for a new way to work our faces..but hope instructions in spanish please… xoxo

Hi Sandra! Thank you so much. It is our pleasure to inspire people to embrace their age with confidence. We have a eBook in Spanish 🙂 Visit our shop page to shop!

  5. How may times do you recommend doing exercises for example the boot camp I only have time to do them once daily will that still work?

    1. Fumiko Takatsu

Hi! We suggest doing the exercises in 3 sets, 3-5 times per day for optimal results. However, even once a day is better then nothing and you will learn to create a routine and a flow that works for you! 😉
