What You Didn’t Know About Collagen

Collagen. The most abundant protein in the human body– that is, until you turn 30…

After age 30, the collagen levels in our skin drop by 1-2% each year and by 50 you’ve already lost nearly a quarter of your body’s collagen and that’s why your skin sags and shows wrinkles. Without collagen, our skin has no structure and things start to fall apart.

There are several types of collagen, but today we’re going to focus on “Type I” which makes up about 90% of the collagen in our body and is found in our skin.

But, what is collagen? Why is it important? Plus, what’s the best way to get it back?

1. What is Collagen

Simply put, collagen is the substance that holds our body together and is the most abundant protein in the entire body. The visible signs of collagen are smooth, supple and elastic skin which holds its integrity and bounces back quickly.

Collagen is the foundation of our entire body and, among other things, without it our skin ripples, wrinkles, and sags. There are many collagen supplements on the market, BUT there’s only one way to effectively rejuvenate the youthening collagen in our skin to eliminate wrinkles.

If you want to smooth wrinkles below the surface, collagen is your key to success.

2. What damages Collagen?

By the time we hit 30 years of age, our collagen starts to take a massive drop by 1-2% every year. If you’ve hit this milestone, you’ve noticed that your skin doesn’t bounce back like it used too, that you see more lines and creases from daily activities like sleeping, talking on the phone, and working.

Unfortunately, it’s not just your habits that are causing these wrinkles. There are unavoidable factors at play against collagen and we experience many (or all) of them every day:

  • Sunlight
  • Smoking
  • Pollution
  • Diets high in sugar
  • Age

Exposure to these puts you on the fast-track to collagen loss. But the good news is that if you understand how to rejuvenate and maintain the collagen in your body, you have a real fighting chance to maintain radiance!

3. Understanding our skin + Collagen

There’s a lot at work at play behind a youthful face. There are emotions and muscles (which is what Face Yoga primarily targets) and then there are the tissues.

We only see the very top layer of our skin, but in fact, our skin is made up of three layers:

  1. The epidermis
  2. The dermis
  3. The hypodermis

Without a strong foundation beneath the surface, the visible top layer of our skin cannot look its best. And this foundation is collagen.

Collagen is only found in the dermis layer of the skin, so to stimulate new collagen production in your skin, you must work beneath the surface, in the dermal layer.

This means that topical products containing collagen do not (and can not) increase collagen. Furthermore, collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin.

4. Micro-needling: the best way to restore Collagen

In short: Use a Derma Roller.

Since collagen ‘lives’ in the middle layer of the skin, we must stimulate it there. The most effective way to boost collagen production is through micro-needling.

Micro-needling uses dozens of tiny needles to prick the skin, and the tool to perform micro-needling is called a Derma Roller.

Derma rollers are the most effective tool to rejuvenate our skin’s collagen and studies have shown that skin treated with four monthly micro-needling sessions lead to a 400% increase in collagen.

(Yes, 400% more collagen 100% naturally!!)

When done properly, micro-needling creates controlled “injuries” to the skin leading to superficial damage. This triggers the body’s wound healing response that looks like this:

  • The skin releases substances that stimulate growth
  • New blood vessels form in the skin
  • The skin starts to make more collagen

Then, over the next 5 days, age-reversing magic happens. The collagen produced by the body is deposited in the micro-needled part of the skin, helping the skin become firmer and improving the skin tone and reducing scarring and hyperpigmentation.

5. How to choose a Derma Roller

Ready to take the plunge into the fountain of youth?! Here’s what you need to know when buying a Derma Roller.

Size matters.

When choosing and using a Derma Roller, there’s a wide variety of choices needle lengths and widths and materials. ALWAYS ensure that your Derma Roller is made with surgical-steel needles and are between .5 mm and 1.0 mm in length.

The amount and length of a Derma Roller’s micro-needles vary based on the amount of skin you are covering. For example, a shallow and low needle count would be used on the cheeks and face, whereas longer needles can be used on the body and chest.

There are a lot of derma rollers on the market, but not all of them are actually safe for your skin and some won’t trigger this crucial response from your body.

Using a derma roller that isn’t well made is a health risk. Our Derma Roller uses FDA-approved technology to stimulate the production of collagen on your skin.

6. Results from the Face Yoga Method Derma Roller

We tried and tested and researched tons of different derma rollers and microneedles to find the exact lengths to fit almost every face and neck. But don’t just take it from us, thousands of women are using our Derma Roller, and their results speak for themselves
